Tesla continues to tweak its referral program in an effort to tap into the company's greatest resource: happy customers. In lieu of traditional marketing or advertising programs, Tesla relies on word of mouth from its existing customers to bring new customers into the fold. And the company offers a bonus to both the buyer and the referring customer in the form of Tesla Reward Credits. How does it work? It's pretty simple.
If you're a Tesla customer (an owner of a Tesla solar system or a Tesla car), you get assigned a unique Tesla referral code. Give this code to a friend or family member and both you and they will get a reward in the form of Tesla Points (reward credits) when they purchase and install a Tesla solar power system or a Tesla car.
As of May, 2023, a Tesla solar referral purchase gets both the buyer and the referrer 9,000 points for a traditional solar panel system or a Tesla Solar Roof. As for the cars, the amount of reward credits you get with purchase varies depending on which model is purchased. The reward bonus for buyers is 1,500 Reward Credits for Model 3 or Model Y, 2,500 points for Model S or Model X. Cybertruck pre-orders are not yet eligible for the referral bonus. The reward bonus for referrers is 2,000 reward credits for Model 3 or Model Y or 3,500 reward credits for a Model S or Model X.
Reward Points can be used in the Tesla shop to buy products like the Tesla wall connector (Tesla's 240V level 2 charger), Tesla T shirts, Tequilla sipping glasses or even Supercharging credits. The Tesla wall charger normally sells for $425 and you can get it for 5,500 Reward points currently. You can also use your reward credits to enter a raffle for an early production CYBERTRUCK. Entries in the raffle cost 500 credits each.

Tesla had removed cars from the referral program in September, 2021, but restored them in May, 2023. Tesla was previously offering cash bonuses for Tesla solar orders but replaced these with the Points-based system in November, 2022.
And though you might think you're "paying for the name" in buying a Tesla branded solar power system, Tesla's solar panel prices are among the lowest in the United States. Tesla's referral program has existed since the early days of the company and used to include much more valuable prizes. This makes sense because the company had not yet established itself as a major player in the automotive market, and the car prices of the Model S and Model X started at about $80,000. Back in those early days, prizes included limited edition signature series car chargers, ride-on Tesla Model S toys and even PowerWall batteries.
There was a secret level to the original Tesla referral program which gave referrers a 2% discount on a Founders Series edition of the upcoming Tesla Roadster (valued at $250,000) for each referral after the fifth one. This meant that anyone who managed to refer 55 Tesla car sales earned a free Roadster. Several YouTubers and social media influencers made enough referrals to actually earn two Roadsters. Of course, the Roadster has not begun shipping yet, but when they do, these referral program all-stars will be very happy campers driving their free Tesla Roadsters.
Tesla suspended the referral program entirely in 2019, but then brought it back a little later that year with lower value prizes: typically 1,000 free supercharging miles per referral. These miles would expire six months after the referral date. In September, 2021, Tesla removed cars from the referral program altogether, focusing the program exclusively on Tesla solar system sales (including the Solar Roof).
Tesla modified the cash bonus for solar referrals from $100 for buyer, $400 for referrer in September, 2021. Later that month, Tesla eliminated traditional solar panel systems from the referral program, but then reinstated the cash bonus for solar power systems (then $300) in October. In the summer of 2022, Tesla lowered the referral bonus for Solar Roof orders from $500 to $300 for buyer and referrer. Tesla also removed a Powerwall incentive for 10 referrals in the Summer of 2022.
For payment, Tesla previously sent checks to both the buyer and referrer once the system had been installed at the customer's home and had gone online with the local utility. This process can take several months from the initial order date. In November, 2022, Tesla replaced the cash bonus with a Points-based system. Both the referrer and the buyer earned 6,000 points with the installation of a Tesla solar panel or Solar Roof system. 6,000 points is currently more than enough to earn a Tesla Wall Connector home charging station (regular price $425). Tesla raised the referral bonus for solar systems from 6,000 to 9,000 reward points in December, 2022. Other merchandise like Tesla logo wear, roof racks and supercharger miles can be purchased with reward points.
For a brief period, Tesla offered a free PowerWall battery to those who referred at least 10 solar system purchases. That was a big perk as a Powerwall can provide uninterrupted power to your home in the event of a blackout. Free shipping of the Powerwall system was included in that offer, however installation costs were the responsibility of the owner. That incentive has since been discontinued.
As of January, 2021, all Tesla solar panel systems and Solar Roof systems include at least one PowerWall or PowerWall+ battery pack. So new buyers of Tesla solar systems get the peace of mind of being able to maintain power even in the result of a grid failure or blackout.
