Tesla's referral program has evolved over the years. If you're a Tesla customer, you can get bonuses or reward credits by referring friends and family to buy a new Tesla car or solar power system. And buyers can also get a discount or referral bonus by using a Tesla Referral Code when they purchase their new car or solar power system. In 2021, car purchases were temporarily removed from the referral program, but now they're back, with a new improved version of the referral program that benefits both the buyers and referring customers.
In January 2024, with the Model Y at its lowest price ever, Tesla is also offering three full months of free Full Self-Driving beta with purchase of any Tesla Model Y, Model S or Model X, if a Tesla Referral Code is provided with purchase. Tesla Solar purchases (solar panels or Solar Roof) are eligible for a $500 instant discount with referral code.
If you are buying a Tesla Model S, Model X or Model Y, or a Tesla solar roof or solar panel system, you'll need a referral code or referral link in order to get the bonus. If you have a friend or family member who owns a Tesla, ask them for their code or referral link.

In May 2023, Tesla added cars back into the referral program and moved to a "Reward Credits" or points system for referrals. Now Tesla customers can share their referral code with friends and family to get points or reward credits, and new Tesla car buyers can use a Tesla referral code to earn points or even get cash discounts or upgrades on cars or solar system purchases. Tesla Reward Credits can be exchanged for Tesla merchandise like chargers, Tesla apparel, roof racks, car upgrades or even free Supercharging miles.
Tesla solar roof and solar panel systems normally earn both the referrer and the buyer 9,000 Tesla points (Reward Credits). Tesla sometimes changes the offer to a cash discount for the buyer. As for Tesla cars, the amount of credits varies for the referrer and for the buyer, depending on which model you (or the referring buyer) buys. As with solar panels, Tesla sometimes offers a cash discount or a service upgrade to buyers instead of reward credits.

Rewards for buyers (as of January, 2024):
As to what you can get for these reward credits or Tesla points, there is a pretty extensive selection of options in the online "Loot Box" store, which is accessible in the Loot Box section of the Tesla mobile app. You can get a Tesla wall connector level 2 charging station ($475 value) for 9,000 points, a Tesla roof rack for Model 3, Model Y or Model S ($400 value) for 8,500 points or a Tesla CCS 1 combo charging adapter ($175 value) for 4,000 points. You can also opt for 2,000 free Supercharger miles in exchange for 4,800 points or 500 miles for 1,500 points.
If you're an active referrer, you can save up points for Tesla car upgrades like the acceleration boost (9,500 credits) or a year of free premium connectivity. Tesla apparel like belt buckles, hoodies and T-Shirts are also available starting at 500 points. For 1,000 points each, you can also buy one or more entries into a raffle to win a Tesla Cybertruck.
Reward Credits currently expire one year after the "Grant Date" which is the date that the referred Tesla car is delivered or the referred solar power system is activated. However, based on the current program terms, any additional referrals within that 12 month period will extend all of the Reward Credits in your account twelve months from the most recent referral. So if you remain active in referring new Teslas (at least one referral every 12 months), you should be able to keep racking up those points for quite some time.
Supercharger miles bought with reward credits expire after six months. However, similar to Reward Credits, if you used Reward Credits to buy more Supercharger miles before your current ones expire, all miles in your account are extended by an additional 6 months, up to a total of 36 months (3 years).
If you're already a Tesla customer, check the "Loot Box" in the Tesla mobile app for your own personal referral code and to check the status of your referrals.
Update (7/8/23): Tesla has added a new cap to the referral program. Customers are now limited to a maximum of twelve referrals per year for each customer. This seems like a mistake, IMHO, as it provides no incentive for the really active referrers from continuing to referral Tesla throughout the year. If Tesla changes this policy, we'll be sure to update this article.
