Monster House and Open Season Come to Blu-ray 3D

By Greg Robinson

After Blu-ray 3D made such a big splash at last year's Consumer Electronics Show, and had its official "launch" this past Spring, owners of 3D-capable displays and Blu-ray 3D players are still wondering if they'll have something other than Avatar to watch with those funky new glasses this winter. (Though having Avatar at all would be a start, wouldn't it?) Jake Sully may not be ready for Blu-ray 3D just yet, but Boog and Elliot are about to get a little closer.

Following in the wake of their June 3D release of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and this week's 3D release of Monster House, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is furthering their role as pioneers of the third dimension with the hot-off-the-press news that they'll be bringing the Ashton Kutcher/Martin Lawrence-voiced Open Season to the Blu-ray 3D format in time for Thanksgiving.

Sony's Blu-ray 3D edition of Open Season will follow the precedent set by Meatballs and Monster House, offering both the 3D and 2D versions of the film on disc. Better still is the fact that a full complement of bonus material from the previous, 2D-only Blu-ray release will also be carried forward to the new release - but wait, there's more.

As a promising sign of things to come, two of the activity -type extras, designed for the little ones in your household, have been "enhanced for 3D" on the upcoming Blu-ray 3D release. That means you'll want to dig those 3D glasses out of the sofa cushions before exploring  "Wheel of Fortune: Forest Edition" and "Voice-a-rama" on the Special Features menu.

Open Season on Blu-ray 3D is expected to hit store shelves on November 16 with a price tag of $39.95.
