Sherwood Debuts R-876 Receiver and BD-876 Blu-ray 3D Player

By Rachel Cericola

Must-see 3D. That's one of the many themes out of this week's Consumer Electronics Show. Just yesterday, we were talking about Sherwood's new 3D-ready receivers. However, they also have another product to match in the BD-876 Blu-ray 3D player.

Aside from the ability to play back 2D and 3D video formats, the BDS-876 can also stream HD and SD content via its networking capabilities. Other features include Blu-ray Deep Color and XV Color, HDMI 1.4 output with Audio Channel Return, and a USB input. On the audio side, this player has onboard decoding for DTS HD Master and High Resolution, as well as Dolby Digital True HD, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus. There are also 192K/24-bit digital-to-analog converters.

However, the player isn't the only first for the company. Another product, the R-876 network audio-video receiver, is said to be the world's first to include the Trinnov Optimizer room correction system. The receiver is also a nice match for the BD-876, featuring a unique 3D spatial correction, six HDMI 1.4 inputs, dual HDMI 1.4a outputs, and Audio Channel Return.

If you don't have a 3D setup, the R-876 is happy to integrate with other devices in your home. Anchor Bay video processing can convert and upscale video through the HDMI input. However, there is also a 1080p bypass. To add in other devices, the receiver has four component video inputs and one output, five composite inputs and two outputs, two coaxial and two optical digital inputs, and one optical output. There are also analog inputs and one output, a phono input, and two USB ports. It's even certified for use with Control4 home control systems.

The R-876 is rated at 125 watts per each of its seven channels. Other features include Wi-Fi support (via an adapter), DLNA 1.5 certification, Windows 7 "Plays To" support, and options for three zones of playback. Added audio content can also be found through the receiver's networking features, which include access to Pandora, Rhapsody, Aupeo, and web radio.

The options don't end after everything is hooked up. Next, you'll need to choose a method of control. Aside from the included IR remote, there are RS-232 and Control4 possibilities. To top off this stunning list of features, the R-876 adds in a Quartz PLL Synthesized tuner with 30 presets and options to add Sirius and an iPod.

"These new products expand the range of the Sherwood Newcastle product line and make state of the art performance even more affordable," said Gary Granning, Sherwood's VP of sales. "Our first Newcastle Blu-ray player provides superb picture and sound, and is a single solution for HD viewing in the home theater thanks to its Internet streaming capability. And at a remarkable price, the R-876 receiver includes the world's most advanced room correction system. Even when speakers aren't placed in the ideal location, listeners will hear sonic images placed in the correct spatial location."

Expect both products to be available this July. Sherwood says that the BD-876 Blu-ray 3D player will have an MSRP of $399.95. The R-876 is listed at $1199.95.
