If you missed out on getting to check out Pixar's Brave in Dolby Atmos, it looks like you'll have another chance to experience this new audio format. Two chances, actually.
Dolby Laboratories and Twentieth Century Fox are joining forces to add Dolby Atmos to two of the studio's fall 2012 theatrical releases.
The next film to get the Dolby Atmos treatment will be Taken 2, which debuts in the U.S. on October 5, 2012. This is the sequel to Liam Neeson's 2008's action thriller. If the guy kicks half the ass that he did in the original, this should be quite the audio treat. Engineer Chuck Michael will supervise the Dolby Atmos mix.
On October 26, 2012, Chasing Mavericks will be the next film to be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos. It's based on the true story of surfing phenomenon Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston). Craig Henighan will mix this one for the theatrical release.
It looks like this announcement is just the tip of the iceberg, too. According to Dolby, Twentieth Century Fox is starting to outfit its Zanuck Theater postproduction facility with Dolby Atmos capabilities, in anticipation of additional Dolby Atmos titles.
Promising a more natural and realistic soundfield that moves sound around and above audiences, Dolby Atmos has the capability to support up to 64 discrete channels of sound.
"Dolby Atmos transports audiences into the on-screen adventure with the most lifelike sensory experience ever offered in cinema," said Doug Darrow, senior VP of cinema for Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby Atmos will immerse moviegoers in the sounds of Istanbul's bustling streets in the action-packed Taken 2 and atop the big waves of Chasing Mavericks."
Don't start looking for tickets just yet. Dolby says that a list of North American theaters selected to show the fall 2012 releases of Taken 2 and Chasing Mavericks in Dolby Atmos won't be made available until closer to the release dates.
