Dolby Reveals First 20 Dolby Atmos Theaters

By Rachel Cericola

Who's up for a trip to Paramus? No, really. Now you have actually have a reason for that road trip. Dolby just announced the first 20 theaters that will receive Dolby Atmos, the company's new audio format, and the New Jersey town made the cut.

Dolby Atmos promises to deliver the most lifelike, immmersive movie-going experience ever. Of course, we've all heard that before. What some of us have yet to hear is the power of up to 64 channels working together to deliver one movie. That's Dolby Atmos.

"It also offers content creators unprecedented control of the placement and movement of sound within the movie theatre leading to powerful storytelling," Dolby said in an announcement.

Those seeking Dolby Atmos in the U.S. will soon be able to find it at 13 different theater locations. That number includes the following six locations in California: the AMC Burbank 16 in Burbank; the AMC Century City 15 in Century City; the AMC Van Ness 14 in San Francisco; the Arclight Sherman Oaks in Sherman Oaks; the Century at Pacific Commons and XD in Fremont; and the The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Elsewhere around the country, the technology will be installed in the AMC Barrywoods 24 in Kansas City, MO; the AMC Downtown Disney 24 in Lake Buena Vista, FL; the AMC Garden State 16 in Paramus, NJ; the Brenden Theatres at the Palms in Las Vegas, NV; the Cinemark West Plano and XD in West Plano, TX; the Cinetopia Vancouver Mall 23 in Vancouver, WA; and the Kerasotes Showplace ICON at Roosevelt Collection in Chicago, IL.

However, it's not just U.S. theaters getting this tech boost; Dolby Atmos will be a global experience. Canadian residents will be able to get a Dolby Atmos fix at the SilverCity-Yonge Eglinton Cinemas in Toronto, ON. International moviegoers will find Dolby Atmos at the Cinesa Diagonal Mar Barcelona and the Empire Leicester Square in London. To round out the Dolby Atmos experience, the technology will also be featured in four different theaters in China.

Dolby recently announced plans to host the world premiere of Brave at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on June 18, 2012. Other theaters are expected to be the first to show Disney-Pixar's 13th theatrical release in Dolby Atmos. Those locations will be announced later this month.
