LG to Unveil 2014 UHD TV Lineup at CES 2014

By Rachel Cericola

Next week, the 2014 International CES will be underway. This is the time of year when we see all sorts of electronic goodies for the New Year. We're expecting a lot of buzz around Ultra HD TV -- and LG Electronics is already getting a jump on the excitement.

First, the company announced the 77-inch 77EC9800 Ultra HD Curved OLED TV a few days back. Now LG is spilling info on the entire 2014 UHD TV line.

The cream of this year's crop will be the previously announced 105UC9 Curved Ultra HD TV. This model will come packing the 5120-by-2160 4K resolution, as well as a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 105-inch screen. That curved screen promises immersive viewing, but the cinematic aspect ratio will deliver a true movie-like experience, eliminating those black bars you typically see on DVDs and Blu-rays.

It also looks like LG will be pushing good sound in its TVs this year, with its "Ultra Surround" concept. The 105UC9 has a 7.2 multi-channel sound system, which was part of a collaboration between LG and harman/kardon.

Besides the 105UC9, LG also plans to unveil the UB9800 Series, which will include 65-, 79-, 84- and 98-inch screen sizes. Besides the Ultra HD resolution, each of these sets will have LG's Tru-Ultra HD Engine Pro with 4K Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC), as well as upscaling for SD, HD or Full HD content.

Another perk on each UB9800 model is the built-in 4K HEVC 60p decoder. This can support broadcast signals in H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats, in both 30p or 60p. Of course, viewers can also enjoy sources that are connected to each set's HDMI, USB and LAN ports.

Other UB9800 features include new 3840-by-2160 Ultra IPS panels for wide viewing angles, sound via harman/kardon, and LG's Ultra HD Cinema 3D technology. The latter uses Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, which is basically LG's brand of passive 3D technology. Passive 3D does cut the resolution in half. However, because these are 4K sets, you'll still get a stunning 1080p image to each eye.

The last of LG's 12 Ultra HD TV models for 2013 include two Ultra HD Curved OLED series and two additional LED series. The OLEDs are the 77-inch EC9800 and the EC9700 Series, which come in 55- and 65-inch sizes. The LEDs include the 55- and 65-inch UB9500 models and the 49- and 55-inch sets under the UB8500 Series. Additional details on each set should be available next week at the 2014 International CES, which runs from January 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

According to LG, all of this year's Ultra HD TVs will have the latest in connectivity, content protection and programming. This lineup also includes LG's Smart TV features, which can put web-based content right on each TV screen.

"Our newest ULTRA HD TV offerings are going to turn a lot of heads at this year's CES," said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV Division at LG Electronics' Home Entertainment Company. "Image quality is simply outstanding, and consumers are recognizing LG as a trend setter in Ultra HD technology and a leader in moving the 4K medium forward."
