LG to Launch 105-inch Ultra Wide 21:9 Curved Ultra HD TV in 2014

By Rachel Cericola

We know that a lot of you are still scrambling to finish up that holiday shopping. However, LG Electonics is already looking forward to the New Year. In just a few weeks, the company plans to unveil an Ultra Wide 21:9 Curved Ultra HD TV at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas. Oh -- and that set is going to be a whopping 105 inches.

If the image doesn't deliver enough bragging rights for you, know that this is the world's first 21:9 aspect ratio Curved Ultra HD TV. It's also the largest curved TV ever made.

Also known as model 105UB9, this TV is actually LG's very first Curved Ultra HD model. The company is making quite a debut in the category, promising a wide viewing angle and an eye-popping picture with a 5120-by-2160 screen resolution. That's 11 million pixels, people!

Both LG Electronics and LG Display worked together on a new technology for this set. According to LG, OLED panels were always preferred for curved displays due to their ability to generate their own light. With this set, the company has overcome the challenge of uneven backlighting by refining its Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology. The end result promises to prevent color leakage and deliver a killer image from any angle.

"LG Display has kept a dominant position in the display market with innovative and differentiated technologies," said Yong-kee Hwang, senior VO and head of LG Display's TV Business Unit. "With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch class curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers."

There's no word on when LG plans to start selling this beast -- or at what price. However, the company will be displaying the set proudly at CES 2014, which runs in Las Vegas from January 7-10, 2014.
