We've seen a lot of ginormous Ultra High-Definition (UHD) TVs over the past year or so. The sweet spot for the manuafacturers making the move into the UHDTV arena seems to be around 84 inches. But what do you do if you want four times the resolution of 1080p, but without the bigger bezel? It looks like LG Electronics is going to have an option for you -- two of them, actually.
LG just announced plans to release two smaller UHDTVs. The company will have 55- and 65-inch UHD models alongside its previously announced 84-incher at next week's 2013 International CES.
All three models have a 3840-by-2160 resolution, which means that any one of them can display four times the resolution of your typical full 1080p HDTV. Each one will also be part of LG's Cinema 3D line, so each of the UHD sets will have the perk of FPR (Film Patterned Retarder) 3D technology. Although this is just another fancy way to say that the TVs will be passive 3D TVs, know that these sets won't be plagued with the same resolution issues often associated with this 3D format.
Passive 3D technology splits the resolution, sending half to the left eye and half to the right. When viewing this on a 1080p HDTV, it probably isn't all that noticable. A 720p passive 3D TV is another story. However, on a UHDTV, it certainly won't be an issue, since that split will still deliver a stunning 1080p image to each eye.
In addition to the new UHDTV models and LG's previous 2013 CES announcements (see below), the company plans to hit the show with a few other goodies. That will include a new 30-inch 4K2K computer monitor with a resolution of 4096-by-2160 and LG's previously announced 55-inch WRGB OLED TV.
The 2013 International CES runs from January 8-11, 2013, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
