LG Unveils LW980S 3D NANO LED HDTV

By Rachel Cericola

LG is adding to its passive 3D TV line, announcing the LW980S LED 3D TV today in Korea.

Because LG is going with passive 3D technology on this one (as with the rest of its LED/LCD TVs), you won't have to use expensive and sometimes bulky active shutter 3D glasses. In fact, the included passive glasses are extremely lightweight, inexpensive and promise a "flicker-free" viewing experience, all without the need for batteries or charging.

Unlike active 3D technology, passive 3D uses technology similar to what's being used at your local Cineplex. However, don't feel that you need to pocket a pair of 3D glasses next time you see The Smurfs; the LW980S will come with glasses inside the package and more are available from a number of different sources.  You can even strut your stuff in a pair of Oakley 3D glasses if you want (but expect to pay a little extra for that privilege).

If you haven't made the move on a Blu-ray 3D player or other native 3D source yet, the set also promises "proprietary" 2D-to-3D conversion technology.  In our experience, these 2D to 3D conversion features are fairly limited in their effectiveness though, so we'd highly recommend springing for a true 3D source component.

Besides the 3D, the LW980S uses a variation on traditional LED backlighting which LG calls NANO Full LED. This TV technology uses a thin film printed with teeny-tiny dots to disperse light more evenly across the screen. The end result is said to be a brighter, cleaner picture free from the uniformity problems that plague most edge-lit LED TVs. TruMotion 400Hz technology helps to present clear motion, even on fast-moving images [editor's note: expect that to translate to 480 Hz processing when this TV makes it to North America].  The Wide Viewing Angle feature means you should be able to actually enjoy it from almost any angle.

The set also comes packing all of LG's Smart TV goodies, which includes 3D Video-on-Demand, available though LG Apps. Other current Smart TV features include on-screen access to services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Facebook, and much more. However, the hook on this platform versus last year's NetCast is that Smart TV sets also come with the Magic Motion Remote Control, which offers easy point-and-click navigation via five simple buttons and an internal gyroscope that tracks the remote's motion.

"The LW980S is the crown jewel of TVs as it includes the most advanced technologies and features we've developed at LG over the years," said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "We've set a new benchmark in connectivity, picture quality and sheer viewing enjoyment."

There's no word on when LG will officially release the LW980S in Asia, Eruope or North America, nor any pricing details. However, international audiences should be able to get a gander at the LW980S this September when LG shows off the set at the IFA electronics show (Internationale Funkausstellung) in Berlin.
