Is it Live or Recorded? Audio Companies to Compare 5.1 and Stereo Recordings to Live Music at NY Audio Show

By Rachel Cericola

Is it live or is it -- well, you know that old commercial. However, it's not just the format that matters; the way that music is mastered makes a big difference in how it sounds, whether it's live or recorded. And if you're headed to this week's NY Audio Show, you can find out all about the process of how audio is mastered.

As part of this week's event, there will be a special presentation titled, "From Studio to You." After a press-only event on Friday, the sponsored showcase will have recording engineers Darcy Proper and Ruairi O'Flaherty available on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. The two will talk about the mastering process and how it can really make a difference in audio quality in "Demystifying the Mastering Process."

Shortly after that, engineer Jim Anderson will follow up with a comparison of stereo, surround and multi-resolution music. As part of the presentation, Anderson plans to use some of his award-winning Patricia Barber mixes for a demo titled, "Comparing the Mixes."

Right after that, there will be an hour of music presented on a 5.1 rig. Hosted by O'Flaherty, attendees can hang out and listen to Lori Lieberman's latest album, Bricks Against the Glass. (You can also check out a clip of that in the video below.) Recorded by Joseph Cali and mastered by Proper, the session will include a "live versus recorded" presentation.

Wrapping up the showcase is Sunday's open floor panel discussion. Starting at 12:00 p.m., "The Art of Making an Album" will include Proper and O'Flaherty, as well as producer/engineer Kevin Killen and Steve Garvey of the Buzzcocks.

All of the above events are sponsored by PMC Loudspeakers, SoundStageDirect and The Sound Organisation, as part of this week's NY Audio Show.

The NY Audio Show will be held at the NY Palace Hotel from April 12-14, 2013. More than 80 companies will be on-hand for this year's event, which will include a variety of live demos, music, and discussions about audio technologies and equipment.
