Hot on the heels of the Mythos announcement, Definitive Technology is also offering up something a little larger. Those of you that love sharing some of your floor space with speakers will certainly appreciate the Bipolar Series SuperTower series.
Announced this summer, Definitive says that all nine new models are now shipping. That includes four floor-standing loudspeakers with built-in subwoofers, three matching center-channel speakers, and two bipolar surround.
These third-generation SuperTowers will replace 11 older models. That makes sense, since Definitive has redesigned everything from appearance to performance. All models include a new patent-pending approach to bipolar speaker design, which the company calls Forward Focused Bipolar Array.
All four floor-standing models boast new midrange and woofer drivers, tweeters, amplifiers and enclosure construction. At $599 each, the BP-8020ST is the entry-level model, with three 3.5-inch midrange drivers, a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter, and an 8-inch active subwoofer driver. For $799, the BP-8040ST has three 3.5-inch BDSS midrange drivers, two-inch aluminum dome tweeters, and the one 8-inch sub driver coupled to two 8-inch low-bass radiators. The BP-8060ST ($999) bumps things up with three 4.5-inch BDSS midrange drivers, two 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters, and a 10-inch active sub driver coupled to two 10-inch low-bass radiators. Finally, the BP-8080ST is the biggest in the bunch, for $1499 each. For that, you'll get three 5.25-inch BDSS midrange drivers, two 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters, and a 12-inch active subwoofer driver pressure coupled to two 12.5-inch low-bass radiators.
Definitive says that the center and surround models also include new BDSS drivers, aluminum dome tweeters and sophisticated crossovers, as well as a tweak to their appearance.
The CS-8040HD center channel features two 4.5-inch BDSS bass/midrange drivers with a 5x10-inch bass radiator and a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter. That is the line's lowest priced center speaker, with an MSRP of $499 each. At $799, the CS-8060HD has the same BDSS drivers and dome tweeter, but adds in an 8-inch active woofer. The last of the center-channel speakers is the CS-8080HD. At $999, this model is a mish-mash of the other two, combining two 5.25-inch BDSS midrange drivers, a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter, and a 5x10-inch active subwoofer driver pressure coupled to two 5x10-inch bass radiators.
Two surround models round out the new SuperTower offerings. At $249 each, the SR-8040BP has two 3.5-inch BDSS drivers and two 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters. The SR-8080BP has two 4.5-inch and two of the 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters, for an extra $100.
