The concept of creating an online film review is as old as the web itself. There's a wonderful joke in Mel Brooks' 1988 gag-fest "History of the World, Part I" which explains, "With the birth of the artist came the inevitable after-birth -- the critic." True enough. The internet gave anyone with a critical eye (and some moderate technical know-how) the ability to create online reviews. For me, I enjoyed the online film review format, because of its immediacy and informality.
I've been working on the Web since its infancy in the early 1990s and, if you know me, you know I've been writing film reviews since my infancy. So it was a natural progression that, when I could, I would write and publish film reviews online. I started back in 1998 and I haven't looked back since.
I find that writing an online film review (versus a film review in the newspaper, radio or TV) allows me to be more casual and speak directly to the reader. Surfing the web, for now, is still a very intimate experience. I enjoy the prospect of connecting with a reader through an online film review and either agreeing about a film or disagreeing and sparking an animated debate.
