Just a few days ago, our own Chris Boylan was talking up the newly announced DTS:X format and its possible contributions (or not) to the world of immersive audio. Now, Steinway Lyngdorf is jumping on the latest innovation in audio and adding it to the company's previously announced Model P200 surround sound processor.
DTS:X is described as the object-based successor to DTS-HD Master Audio. What that basically means is that this next-gen codec is DTS' entry into immersive audio. How they will be doing that is anyone's guess, since the company has yet to announce many details. However, the company says that when the technology launches in March, several manufacturers, including Anthem, Denon, Integra, Krell, Marantz, McIntosh, Onkyo, Outlaw Audio, Pioneer, Theta Digital, Trinnov Audio, and Yamaha, will all support the format, with more announcements expected in the coming months.
But back to Steinway Lyngdorf. They are hoping to make the Model P200 the perfect media machine, with plenty of love for every immersive audio option out there. When the Model P200 was first announced back in September, the company said it would come packing support for both Dolby Atmos and Auro Technologies' AURO-3D format as well. So basically, no matter what format you choose, this one component will have you covered.
The three-dimensional surround sound processor even has impressive video scaling, support for 4K and 3D video, HDCP 2.2, and HDMI switching. Also worth mentioning is the company's RoomPerfect feature, which adjusts each speaker to the listener's environment.
"At Steinway Lyngdorf, we are very excited to support DTS:X," said Thomas Birkelund, Steinway Lyngdorf's CEO. "The new solution from DTS, Inc. delivers enhanced flexibility and interactivity for lovers of pure, fully immersive audio. Combined with our fully digital systems and RoomPerfect room correction system, we will deliver an experience like you have never heard before."
As previously mentioned, the official launch of DTS:X is planned for March 2015, so it's possible that Steinway Lyngdorf will make this feature available right out of the box. After all, the Model P200 still doesn't have an official ship date. For now, it's expected to be available sometime early this year, priced around $18,000.
