Originally introduced about 11 years ago, the LS50 remains a favorite of audiophiles and audio reviewers worldwide. It offers silky smooth midrange, detailed treble and soundstage transparency that's hard to match at any price. The current LS50 "Meta" version was introduced in 2020 and improves upon the original by the application of advanced technology. The "Meta" name comes from KEF's "Metamaterial Absorption Technology" (MAT). MAT is a complex maze-like structure embedded in the speaker cabinet which is said to absorb "99% of the unwanted sound from the rear of the driver, eliminating the resulting distortion and providing purer, more natural sound." The result is a loudspeaker that sounds even sweeter and cleaner than the original.
Our own Ian White raved about the original KEF LS50 when they first came out, comparing them to speakers that cost over $5,000/pair. He even nominated it for our exclusive "Biggie" Award (which it won). If you're an audiophile or music-lover searching for a taste of that elusive high-end sound for a nominal investment, the LS50 Meta may be just what you're looking for. The speakers simply disappear when you press play, transporting you to the studio where the music was recorded.
At its regular price of $1599.99/pair, the LS50 Meta is a great deal. But, getting $300 off that price makes this a no-brainer.
What makes the KEF LS50 sound so good? Its coaxial UniQ driver design places the tweeter in the center of the woofer/midrange unit, allowing critical midrange and high frequencies to arrive at your ears at the same time. This avoids the phasing errors that can happen with traditional stacked driver speaker designs. Though it's compact in size (about 12 " high by 9 " wide by 11 " deep), the speaker can go much lower into the bass registers than you'd expect - down to about 50 Hz. For those who want more bass, you can get the LS50 bundled with a KEF subwoofer for truly deep bass extension.
No matter what type of music you enjoy, the LS50 will bring out details that you've probably missed before. Match them up with a high quality source and a decent amplifier and you'll have yourself a very special "HiFi system" that will be the envy of your well-heeled audiophile friends.
Fans of multi-channel immersive music and movies can purchase 2 pairs of the LS50 Meta, match them up with a KEF subwoofer, KEF Center channel speaker and KEF's Dolby Atmos speaker modules for a killer 5.1.2-channel immersive surround sound system.
