Sonos users can throw out that PC -- not literally, of course. After all, you may need it for printing or work or something. However, you won't need it to stream iTunes to your Sonos system. The company just announced a new app update that will do all of that for you.
Instead of tapping into Bluetooth or AirPlay, Sonos debuted the Sonos System Software 3.8.3 update for the Sonos Controller for iOS devices. The new software will allow Sonos users to stream iTunes content from any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to any Sonos speaker or player.
According to Sonos, 60 percent of music is purchased directly on mobile devices, so it makes sense that they'd want to cut out any type of middleman.
The Sonos System Software 3.8.3 is available now, to users with iOS 6. To get the goods, just update your Sonos software and Sonos Controller apps via iTunes. Also, you're going to need to make sure that your iOS device is on your home's wireless network. Launch the app and go to the main music menu and start cranking. All of your music, playlists and podcasts will be available as a music source under "This iPhone," "This iPad," or "This iPod" (see the image below).
It sounds very similar to Bluetooth and AirPlay, but better -- at least according to Sonos. The software allows Sonos users to play up to 12 unique streams and up to 32 players, which includes music on your iOS device, from your MP3 collection or through streaming services like Pandora and Spotify. Also, the Sonos setup is sort of like its own network, which means you can play music in sync between rooms and not drop out regardless of whatever else is using your home broadband.
