Sharp Announces First 3D-Ready 1080p DLP Home Theater Projector

By Rachel Cericola

This week's CEDIA Expo has barely cracked open its doors, and we're already seeing some very drool-worthy items.

Sharp kicked off its announcements with an entry into the 3D projector market, the XV-Z17000. Boasting 1920 x 1080 pixels and a 30000:1 contrast ratio, this DLP unit can deliver the 3D goods via IR Link and DLP Link technologies. Even better, Sharp wants to promote domestic tranquility so they're packing not one but two pairs of active shutter 3D glasses right inside the box.

To make the picture perfect, Sharp has included Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) functionality, Keystone Correction and Image Shift Function. The latter can vertically shift images in a 16:9 format, promising a big picture in a small space or simply more flexible installation options.

Other features include two HDMI 1.4 inputs, a computer/component (mini D-sub 15 pin), component (3 RCA), S-Video and video (RCA) inputs, as well as an RS-232C port. Sharp also says that the unit is whisper quiet, with about 23dB of fan noise.

Packing a 250-watt projection lamp, the projector is expected to provide about 3,000 hours of entertainment, depending on usage, before a bulb change is necessary.

"The XV-Z17000 offers the consumer a formidable and flexible platform for projecting 3D movies, sporting events, Internet video or any compatible programming," said Bruce Tripido, associate VP for Sharp's Entertainment Products Division. "It can also be used to dramatically deliver all manner of 2D content, for day-to-day watching or special events. The included glasses, which can be adjusted to view content in either 3D or 2D, allow consumers to begin enjoying this projector immediately."

Sharp hasn't mentioned anything about pricing yet. However, the XV-Z17000 should start selling in Q1 2011.
