Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics announced the company's first Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar package, the HW-K950. It wasn't the first product to promise immersive, 3D-style sound from a slim enclosure. However, it was the first one to kick in a pair of Dolby Atmos-capable wireless speakers and a wireless subwoofer.
The one thing the HW-K950 seemed to be missing was a price and release date. At an event today in New York City, the company gave us both -- as well as an additional soundbar option, the HW-K850. Both models will support Dolby Atmos Cinema Sound.
Measuring a mere 2.1 inches high, the soundbar piece on the HW-K950 uses three forward-facing and two upwards-facing speakers to make the audio sound like it's coming from every angle, including overhead. When combined with the included pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled wireless rear speakers and the wireless subwoofer, it boasts 5.1.4-channel sound.
The flat HW-K850 doesn't include the rear speakers, but instead uses the one soundbar and the wireless subwoofer to deliver 3.1.2-channel sound.
"We are thrilled to bring consumers an unmatched, immersive sound experience with our first Dolby Atmos-equipped soundbars," said Jim Kiczek, vice president of Samsung Electronics America Audio Group. "The HW-K950 and HW-K850 provide a next-generation home entertainment audio experience by truly coming alive to surround consumers with rich, deep, and powerful 3D sound and are the ideal systems to complement our line of televisions."
Samsung plans to start selling the HW-K950 and HW-K850 soundbars sometime this summer. Expect these models to be priced at $1,499 and $899, respectively.
