Samsung Debuts New UHD TV Models Including 85-Incher for HU8550 Series

By Rachel Cericola

The Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV market will be heating up this summer. Samsung Electronics has announced several new TV models, which will expand the company's offering to six UHD series with sizes ranging from 40 to 110 inches.

The latest and largest of the new additions is the 85-inch UN85HU8550. Promising an extra-large, eye-popping image, this member of the flat-panel HU8550 Series has a 3840x2160 resolution, as well as UHD Dimming and Precision Black features. UHD Dimming can scan the number of zones in the image and adjust brightness accordingly, while Precision Black dims LEDs behind the darkest area of the picture for a better contrast and darker black levels. Other features include Wide Color Enhancer Plus technology, Clear Motion Rate 1200 for smooth action, four HDMI inputs and three USB ports.

This 85-incher also has a quad-core processor, which will make whipping through all of the set's Smart TV features a breeze. Besides access to a slew of web-based streaming services, Samsung's Smart TV platform includes the recently released Smart Hub, which can organize all of your entertainment into five panels right on the home screen. It also has the S Recommendation feature for discovering new content based on your preferences and what's trending. And just in case you still find it overwhelming to navigate through all of the features, this set has voice interaction, which allows you to speak commands for everything from web surfing to powering the TV to "turn off."

Samsung's HU8550 Series is currently available in sizes ranging from 50 to 75 inches, with an 85-incher coming this month.

Samsung will offer the 85-incher later this month, with a $9,999.99 price tag. However, the company is currently selling the HU8550 in 50- ($2,499.99), 55- ($2,999.99), 60- ($3,499.99), 65- ($3,999.99) and 75-inch ($5,999.99) screen sizes.

Samsung also plans to release the curved HU7250 Series. That curved design boasts a more immersive viewing experience, a wider field of view with a panoramic effect, and a better viewing angle from any seat in the house. The HU7250 Series includes UHD Dimming and upconverting of SD, HD and full HD content to near UHD picture quality. It also has Samsung's own Quad Screen Multi-Link feature, which allows users to turn one screen into four. Other features include the quad-core processor and the Smart TV platform with Smart Hub. The 55-inch model ($2,199.99) and a 65-incher ($3,299.99) will start shipping sometime in August.

Last in the new UHD TV lineup is the HU6950 Series. This collection of flat UHD TV sets has the quad-core processor, the Smart TV options with Smart Hub, web browsing, and the Quad Screen Multi-link feature. Other features include Clear Motion Rate 240 technology, UHD Dimming, four HDMI inputs, and three USB ports. Available this month, the HU6950 Series includes a 40-inch model ($999.99), a 50-inch set ($1,499.99), and a 55-incher ($1,999.99).

"As the UHD TV market leader, we're seeing excellent category growth and adoption among consumers who are looking for the highest resolution and best-in-class picture quality Samsung UHD TVs offer," said Joe Stinziano, executive VP of Samsung Electronics America. "We're excited to introduce another super-sized model and two entirely new series to our UHD TV family. Whether it's a flat or curved UHD TV, Samsung continues to provide consumers the broadest selection of UHD TVs for any home."

All of Samsung's UHD TVs also include support for HEVC, HDMI 2.0, MHL 3.0 and HDCP 2.2, as well as future-proofing options via the Samsung UHD Evolution Kit.
