Crackle on Roku Now Offers Free Full-Length Movie and TV Show Streaming

By Rachel Cericola

Roku is adding even more content to its streaming set-top family. However, instead of adding new channels or a new service, the existing Crackle channel is the one getting the upgrade.

The streaming set top box manufacturer just announced the Crackle channel update, which will allow customers to view ad-supported full-length movies and TV shows, all for free. The service promises hundreds of Hollywood movies in genres including action, comedy, crime, horror, thriller and sci-fi. That lineup will also include TV shows, as well as Crackle's own original programming.

"The updated Crackle channel was launched on Roku just over a week ago and has quickly become a top five installed and watched channel," said Jim Funk, Roku's VP of business development. "We are thrilled with these early results which show the power of great content and even more important great value."

Current and upcoming available movie titles include Ghostbusters, A Few Good Men, The Patriot, 21, and The Da Vinci Code. Roku says that titles are refreshed frequently, with about 20 different movies available each month from Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Classics.

The Crackle channel is available to Roku customers free of charge. However, customers already receiving the channel will need to do a manual upgrade through the Roku Channel Store.

Roku's current set-top lineup includes the Roku HD ($59.99), Roku XD ($79.99) and the Roku XDS ($99.99). All players work with virtually any TV, and offer built-in Wi-Fi and HD streaming, depending on the content provider. The XD and XDS bump the streaming up to full HD 1080p (where available), with Wireless-N support. The XDS is the cream of the crop, with dual-band wireless, component video and optical audio outputs, as well as a USB port.

All Roku streaming players can tap into the Crackle channel, as well as content from Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Pandora, NBA Game Time Premium, NHL GameCenter Live, and much more. Some subscription fees apply, depending on the channel. Check out Roku's website for a full listing of available services.
