Philips Adds HDR to 4K TV Lineup, Prices 4K HDR Blu-ray Player

By Rachel Cericola

This year, it's not good enough to have a 4K TV, but you need an HDR-capable 4K TV. That's probably why Philips isn't making one 4K TV without that image perk.

All seven the company's new 4K Ultra HD Smart TVs for 2016 will include support for high dynamic range (HDR). Adding that into the entire 4K TV lineup will give each set a boost in brightness, contrast, and color performance.

Available in 49-, 55- and 65-inch screen sizes, the 6000 Series is listed as this year's "affordable" Ultra HD 4K line, although pricing has yet to be announced. These sets include Micro Dimming, BrightPro backlight, 802.11ac Wireless LAN with MIMO antennas, HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2, the Pixel Plus Ultra HD processing engine, a 120 Perfect Motion Rate, and Sonic Emotion Premium sound. In addition to Smart TV apps such as Netflix, YouTube, VUDU, Xumo, and Pandora, the 6000 Series allows for Wireless Screencasting from select portable devices.

You'll know the 7000 Series when you see it, because both the 49- and 55-inch models have a Razor Slim cabinet design. These sets also have BrightPro backlight, the 802.11ac Wireless LAN with MIMO antennas, HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2 on all ports, a Pixel Plus UltraHD processing engine, the 120 Perfect Motion Rate, the Sonic Emotion Premium sound, and access to apps and Wireless Screencasting.

The last in the lineup is the most impressive. That's because the 8600 Series features Dolby Vision, a Wide Color Gamut (82 percent of BT.2020), BrightPro backlight, Micro Dimming Pro techbnology, 802.11ac Wireless LAN with MIMO antennas, HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2 on all ports, a 240 Perfect Motion Rate, a Pixel Precise UltraHD processing engine, the Sonic Emotion Premium sound, and all of the aforementioned Smart TV apps. Like the other TV models listed above, pricing has yet to be announced for the 8600 Series, but when it starts selling, it will be available in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes.

If you're looking for something to pair with that 4K TV, Philips is also planning to release the BDP7501 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player this spring. This player is also HDR-compatible, so users can have an even bigger selection of 4K content to enjoy. The BDP7501 also has support for HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2, built-in WiFi, and the ability to stream apps such as Netflix and YouTube.

"The combination of 4K resolution and HDR image quality is truly astounding," said Karl Bearnarth, executive vice president of sales and marketing for P&F USA, Inc., the exclusive North American licensee for Philips consumer televisions and home video products. "Philips is committed to delivering the very best possible viewing experience for our customers, so we're offering HDR support throughout our entire 2016 4K line and doubling down on our 4K commitment with the launch of our new Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray player."

There's no word on when Philips will start shipping the newly announced 2016 4K Ultra HD Smart TVs. However, the BDP7501 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player will be available sometime this spring, with an MSRP of $399.99.
