Right before the holiday weekend, Panasonic slipped in an interesting little announcement. The company says it will start shipping the DMP-UB900 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player soon. While it may seem like such news would get lost in all of the weekend fanfare, we're guessing this won't be the last you'll be hearing about it. It won't actually ship until this fall.
The DMP-UB900 is the latest player to support 4K Blu-rays, as well as regular Blu-rays and DVDs. However, Panasonic is throwing in a few new perks. First of all, this is the first 4K Blu-ray player to get THX certification. It will also support High Dynamic Range (HDR). Heck, it will even satisfy your inner-audiophile, since it has a hi-res audio compatible 192kHz/32bit Audio DAC.
Panasonic is also making this player a standout with the company's original 4K High-Precision Chroma Processor. According to Panasonic, 4K image color signals (4:2:0) are interpolated into 4K (4:4:4) by a multi-tap chroma process, which creates more natural textures and depth. That processing power will also be applied to streaming 4K content, which the player can tap into from YouTube and Netflix.
Other features include built-in Wi-Fi, 3D support, DLNA, Miracast, two HDMI outputs, and 7.1-channel analog audio outputs.
Panasonic isn't taking pre-orders for the DMP-UB900 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player yet. However, the unit is expected to ship out this September, priced at $699.
