OPPO is adding a little something to its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players. The company just released a firmware upgrade that will allow the UDP-203 and the UDP-205 to support Dolby Vision.
Dolby Vision is a High Dynamic Range (HDR) format that promises better brightness, contrast, and color for OTT online streaming, Ultra HD Blu-ray, broadcast, and gaming applications. Besides select Blu-rays, the format is currently streaming through streaming on Amazon, Netflix, and VUDU.
Out of the box, each of these players can handle 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-rays, DVDs, and CDs. Other features include HDR10, Wide Color Gamut, three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 2.0 input, and two HDMI outputs. The UDP-205 also has two ESS Technology ES9038PRO DACs, a dedicated 7.1-channel surround audio output, a headphone amplifier, and more.
The firmware update will make the OPPO UDP-203 and the UDP-205 the first Blu-ray players to support Dolby Vision. If your player is currently connected to the web, just follow the on-screen prompts or access the update in the player's setup menu. If you don't have the player on your home network, you can download the firmware file from OPPO's website or request a firmware CD.
"Delivering reference picture quality and a premium viewing experience has always been the core mission of OPPO's disc player products. We are thrilled to work with Dolby to incorporate Dolby Vision into our UHD disc players," said Jason Liao, CTO of OPPO Digital. "The home theater experience is even more lifelike and engaging with the astonishing brightness, contrast, and color provided by Dolby Vision."
The OPPO UDP-203 and UDP-205 are available now, priced at $549 and $1,299, respectively.
