New Logitech TV Cam Turns Virtually any HDTV into a Skype Video Phone

By Rachel Cericola

Now you really have no excuse not to see friends and family more often. Logitech is making it possible to have a little face-time, all without having to leave the comfort of your couch.

The company just joined forces with Skype for the new Logitech TV Cam HD, a high-def camera that sits atop the TV. The Skype service is built right into the unit. All you need is an available HDMI input and a web connection.

Logitech has included both WiFi and Ethernet options, with no additional software needed. The Logitech TV Cam HD does have a remote controller bundled in the package, so you easily call other Skype users, whether they're using a smartphone, tablet, HDTV or computer.

Once the camera is hooked up, just sign into your Skype account (or create a new one). From there, you can make calls from your couch or home theater chair. The Logitech TV Cam HD also allows users to call landline and mobile numbers, but fees and/or subscriptions may apply.

Other features include a wide-angle lens developed in conjunction with the German optics specialist Carl Zeiss, as well as Logitech Fluid Crystal Technology and a built-in ringers.

"Amazing connections happen when the video calling experience moves to the TV in the living room: the most popular and comfortable place in the house," said Joerg Tewes, vice president of Logitech's digital home business group. "Because of the size of the TV screen and the quality of the video, the new Logitech TV Cam HD with Skype brings a whole new social element to the living room, helping you feel like your family and friends are right there with you. It's a transformative experience."

The Logitech TV Cam HD will start selling in the U.S. and Europe beginning in August and September 2012, respectively. Logitech has listed the camera with an MSRP of $199.99.
