Netflix Cleans Up Its Act with Just for Kids Streaming Option

By Rachel Cericola

Before you make any rash decisions about your Netflix account, the company wants you to know how much they love the kids. In fact, the media service seems to be targeting kids (and parents) with a new menu option, known as "Just for Kids."

The new feature allows families to quickly find instant-viewing options for kids ages 12 and under. Choose from a variety of categories, such as Animated, Nickelodeon, Everyday Heroes, and Girl Power; from there, you can flip through associated titles. There's also an option that allows you to group selections by popular characters, including Blue's Clues, Sesame Street, Dora, The Jonas Brothers, SpongeBob SquarePants, Selena Gomez, and more.

"Kids discover and categorize movies and TV shows differently than adults," said Todd Yellin, Netflix's VP of product innovation. "Just as we have revolutionized the way people find the movies and shows they want to watch when and how they want to, we're making it easier for kids and parents alike to have the best possible Netflix experience."

If you're wondering where your "Just for Horror Fans" option is, you'd better start watching more scary flicks. According to Netflix, almost half of its 25 million subscribers in the United States and Canada have streamed at least two movies or shows made for kids in the last 90 days.

Don't go reaching for the remote just yet; the new option is currently only available on the Netflix website. Once on the site, you'll see a Just for Kids tab at the top. Netflix says that the same functionality will start popping up on the iPad, video game consoles, and other devices over the next year.

The Just for Kids selection is compiled using Netflix ratings and reviews from Common Sense Media, a non-profit organization that rates media and technology with parents and kids in mind.

"Family movie night is a great way for parents to connect with their kids in our 24/7 media culture, and over the last few years, Netflix has recreated the concept, bringing kids and parents together around great, quality entertainment on multiple platforms," said Amy Guggenheim Shenkan, president and COO of Common Sense Media. "We've partnered with Netflix for many years and our work informs the overall quality and scope of the 'Just for Kids' experience, helping parents to make great media choices for the entire family."
