Mitsubishi Announces New 3D1 DLP 3D TVs

By Rachel Cericola

Mitsubishi is about to get in your face -- literally. The company just announced its 2010 line of 3D1 3D-ready DLP Home Cinema TVs.

In case you didn't know, Mitsubishi has been selling 3D DLP TVs since 2007. That would make this year's models the company's fourth generation of 3D-ready TVs. Expect three different series: the 638, 738, and Diamond 838 series. Between the three offerings, there seven sets in 60-, 65-, 73-, and 82-inch sizes.

According to Mitsubishi execs, Mitsubishi 3D TVs currently utilize a "checkerboard" format to display 3D content in split resolution. Twice adds that an adapter will be needed to play back other 3D formats, including those used in new 3D Blu-ray Disc players. They also say that an emitter and active-shutter 3D glasses or DLP Link active-shutter glasses will be required. However, Mitsubishi has yet to announce whether or not the new sets will come with these necessary accessories in the box.

The MDEA 738 series includes StreamTV web content and a USB jack for 802.11 support.

A few things each unit will have include Brilliant/Bright/Natural and Game Modes, three HDMI connections (with HDMI-CEC), HDMI-PC compatibility, and MDEA's exclusive 6-Color Processor. There's also 16-speaker 5.1-channel Dolby Digital surround sound on-board inside the unit.  The sound system uses a room's side walls to boune sound behind the listener, creating a realistic sense of space without the need for rear speakers.

Here is pricing for the three models in the 638 series:

  • WD-60638 60-inch 3D DLP TV (MSRP: $1199, Coming in May 2010)

The 738s also feature a USB jack for 802.11 WiFi support (with additional purchase of optional adapter), Smooth120 technology, video calibration features, and a universal remote.
