An immersive soundtrack for a stoner action-comedy? Absolutely! Lionsgate and DTS just announced plans to release the American Ultra Blu-ray with a DTS:X audio track.
Like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X can deliver an immersive audio experience. However, the hook on DTS:X is that it can replicate and deliver the fluid movement of sound by matching audio with what is happening on and off screen. (For more on the format, check out "DTS:X is Coming in 2015 and You're Going to Need a New Receiver.")
American Ultra stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart as Mike and Phoebe, a couple of stoners/slackers living the high life in a small town. However, the buzz starts to wear off when Mike (Eisenberg) realizes that he's actually a CIA sleeper agent with lethal fighting skills -- as well as the target of government hitmen. The film also has Topher Grace, Connie Britton, Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman, and Tony Hale. The American Ultra Blu-ray Combo Pack will come with the Blu-ray, a standard-def DVD and an UltraViolet Digital Copy of the film. The special features include the behind-the-scenes documentary "Activating American Ultra," a peek at the weapons with "Assassinating on a Budget," a gag reel, and an audio commentary track with Director Nima Nourizadeh.
Lionsgate seems to be backing the DTS:X format a lot lately. The studio released the Ex Machina Blu-ray with a DTS:X track back in July. More recentlly, they announced DTS:X tracks for the theatrical releases of American Ultra, Sicario and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.
The American Ultra Blu-ray will be released on November 24, 2015.
