LG Packs VUDU into HDTVs

By Rachel Cericola

Do You Vudu?

Instant entertainment sure is fun. Now it’s also pretty cool looking. Starting next month, LG will begin streaming VUDU’s HD movie service to select LCD and plasma HDTVs.  This means you'll be able to access VUDU's wide selection of standard and high definition films without any additional hardware - just the TV itself.

The manufacturer will be the first to incorporate VUDU's instant-access high-definition movie service to TVs, via its NetCast Entertainment Access lineup. The first TVs to receive the service will be LG’s LH50 1080p LCD series and PS80 Plasma 1080p series.

"Our alliance with VUDU further demonstrates LG's commitment to delivering the ultimate HD viewing experience, by providing instant access to more 1080p movie content than ever before," said Peter Reiner, LG’s senior vice president or marketing and strategy. "VUDU highlights the superb video quality of our 'Full HD' sets with NetCast Entertainment Access, while providing consumers with access to thousands of HD movies with the touch of a button."

LG's NetCast Entertainment Access also provides content from Netflix, Yahoo! Widgets, YouTube, and more.

The VUDU service will allow customers to instantly buy or rent movies and TV titles -- with more than 2,000 of them in high-def. VUDU has its own HDX format, which provides full 1080p HD and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound and a version of this will be available for streaming. The VUDU catalog is updated weekly, with many major releases available months before they hit subscription-based services. There are no monthly fees and no additional hardware is needed.

LG's LH50 1080p LCD series and PS80 Plasma 1080p series will begin receiving VUDU on-demand movies starting next month. The 47LH50 LCD and the 50-inch 50PS80 are available now for $1,699 and $1,799, respectively. LG’s 42-inch 42LH50 LCD and 60-inch 60PS80 will available and existing LG Broadband TV owners will be able to add the VUDU service next month.
