The 2012 CEDIA Expo is just weeks away, but we're starting to see product news slowly leak out -- and it's the kind that will make you insanely jealous that you won't be in the Indianapolis, Indiana, vicinity at the beginning of next month.
The latest announcement comes from LG Electronics, who should have a pretty big display on the show floor -- no, literally. The company says that they will have the highly anticipated 84-inch Ultra-Definition 3D TV on hand, which will come sporting 3D and web-based Smart TV features.
If that's not enough, LG says that this is the world's first 84-inch UD TV, and is the direct result of consumer demand for bigger, more immersive TVs.
This 84-incher will come to the show packing 8 million pixels per frame, which is basically four times the resolution (3840x2160) of any existing HDTV. It also has LG's Triple XD Engine and the Resolution Upscaler Plus. The latter promises to upscale content from external sources, which includes whatever you have stashed on a hard drive and streaming video from user-generated content websites.
LG is packing its Cinema 3D technology into this model, which basically means this is a passive 3D TV. Light, comfortable glasses should be on-hand for the demo, which should also include the 3D Depth Control feature. Designed to deliver a customized 3D experience, this allows users to tweak the level of the effects. Other 3D features include 2D-to-3D conversion and 3D Sound Zooming, which analyzes on-screen content to generate sound according to location and movement of those objects.
This set is also compatible with LG's Magic Remote, which can provide access to on-screen content as well as LG's Smart TV services. Currently, LG has about 1400 apps available through the web-based platform. That lineup includes 3D World, which offers movies and games in 3D.
Other features include a 2.2 speaker system with two 10-watt speakers and two 15-watt subwoofers, Smart Share Plus for sharing content with portable devices and laptops, and the Dual Play feature for head-to-head gaming.
"The 4K display market is still in its infancy, but it was important for LG to claim a stake in this space," said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics. "LG's UD 3D TV represents a whole new level of home viewing experience because it offers every advanced technology we currently have to offer."
If all goes well, LG plans to roll out the 84-inch UD 3D TV to North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting sometime in September.
