LG Pumps Up Music Flow Speakers with Google Cast

By Rachel Cericola

Late last year, LG Electronics announced a slew of speakers known as the Music Flow lineup. At the beginning of the year, the company gave each one a formal introduction at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. Now, LG wants to give all seven speakers a little upgrade, through a collaboration with Google.

LG just announced plans to put Google Cast into the entire collection of Music Flow smart speakers and soundbars. This basically means that users can now stream music to the speakers from any iOS and Android devices, as well as Mac, Windows or Chromebook computers.

In addition to streaming whatever music you have on your mobile, Google Cast will allow users to tap into streaming services such as Pandora, Songza, TuneIn, iHeartRadio and Rdio, as well as everything from Google Play Music. Deezer and Spotify Connect offer additional streaming options too, with the latter acting as a remote so users can control speakers directly through that app.

Of course, you could probably stream all of these same services with Bluetooth, but LG says that Google Cast offers a better sound experience, since the music is sent from the cloud and not an actual mobile device.

The current Music Flow lineup includes the battery-powered H4 Portable WiFi Speaker, the H7, H5 and H3 WiFi Speakers, and the HS9, HS7 and HS6 WiFi Sound Bars. All seven speakers can be controlled using LG's free Music Flow app for iOS, Android and Chromebook devices. Besides connecting to mobile devices, Music Flow speakers can actually connect to each other, allowing for whole-house music.

Other Music Flow features include Bluetooth, a Home Cinema mode for movie and TV watching, and Auto Music Play for syncing devices via WiFi.

"We are pleased to announce that LG Music Flow will be among the first audio speakers to feature Google Cast," said Byung-hoon Min, senior vice president and head of the CAV division at the LG Home Entertainment Company. "Google Cast is a perfect companion for LG's Music Flow audio system. We are excited to work with Google in making music a more enjoyable experience for consumers worldwide."

LG will make Google Cast available in the HS9 ($999), HS7 ($599), HS6 ($499), H7 ($379), H5 ($279) and H3 ($179) starting this month, with those features coming to the H4 Portable ($199) by the end of May. Current Music Flow speaker users will be able upgrade existing products over the air with Google Cast once those features become available.
