LG Debuts 4K HDR-enabled OLED TV Lineup for 2016

By Rachel Cericola

Last year, we finally got a decent number of 4K TVs released into the market. However, 2016 is going to be the year of high dynamic range (HDR). Just a few days ago, LG Electronics announced plans to release a lineup of HDR-enabled Super UHD 4K TVs. Now, the company is out at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, talking up its 2016 line of 4K HDR-enabled OLED TVs.

HDR promises a better range of brightness and shadow detail, making for a better overall viewing experience. These 2016 TVs combine HDR technology with OLED, which uses self-illuminating (self-emissive) pixels to create an even brighter and more colorful image.

In case you need more persuading, know that all of LG's 2016 OLED TVs have "HDR Pro," a perk that promises to pump up that already awesome HDR viewing experience. That's done with an increased contrast ratio and color range. The company is expecting this OLED TV line to be certified as "Ultra HD Premium" by the UHD Alliance. That basically means that these TVs have met all of the UHD Alliance's requirements for resolution, peak luminance, black levels, wide color gamut, audio quality, and more. Each of these 2016 OLED TVs will also support industry-standard HDR formats, including HDR10 and DolbyVision HDR technology.

LG will launch the 2016 4K HDR-enabled OLED TV lineup with the flagship 77- and 65-inch G6 and 65- and 55-inch E6 models. The company is planning a total of eight new models in flat and curved configurations, as well as in various screen sizes.

Both the G6 and E6 models will have the new Picture-On-Glass design, which is a perk that's specific to OLED technology. Measuring just 2.57mm in depth, these TVs have a translucent glass back and a forward-facing harman/kardon soundbar speaker system. Other features include OLED's Pixel Dimming technology for brighter colors and rich shadow details, 10-bit panel and 10-bit processing power, LG's Color Prime Pro technology, and LG's new webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform.

"Our 2016 OLED TV lineup features a long list of innovations, such as Picture-on-Glass design and HDR Pro, which are featured prominently in the G6 and E6 models," said Brian Kwon, president and CEO at LG's Home Entertainment Company. "By upping our OLED TV game every year, we are driving innovation in the TV space so that more consumers will see and hear about the benefits of owning an OLED TV. We think 2016 will be a game-changing year for this category."

For 2016, LG plans to have a total of four new 4K series and eight OLED TVs overall. The G6 and EG series will join the curved panel C6 and flat-panel B6 series that will be available in 65- and 55-inch sometime in the first quarter of 2016. Exact release dates and pricing have yet to be announced.
