CES: LG BD590 Blu-ray Player Comes With 250 GB Hard Disk Drive

By Greg Robinson

Kicking off the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), LG introduced a host of new home entertainment products. Blu-ray Disc fans will surely appreciate LG's new BD590, the industry's first Blu-ray Disc player to feature an integrated hard disk drive (HDD). In addition to its internal HDD, the BD590 also features LG's popular NetCast internet services package.

Thanks to its internal 250GB HDD, the BD590 offers consumers the ability to store and play back music, images, home-made movies as well as video content from VUDU, part of the LG's NetCast suite of service offerings.

Archiving one's CD collection is a purported feature of the BD590, whereby consumers can rip and archive a CD to the HDD while benefiting from Gracenote's MusicID feature, which is built into the BD590.  Owners can choose between lossy and lossless compression fir highest quality.

Also available is MusicID-Stream, which will allow you to isolate a song playing within a movie or television program and obtain artist and song information plus cover art and more. It's not yet clear what types of programming will work with this new service, but it certainly promises to be interesting.

In addition to its internal HDD and NetCast web services package, the BD590 is at its core a Blu-ray Disc player. Featuring all the features we've come to expect from a Profile 2.0-compliant machine, the BD590 delivers 1080p video output (including DVD upscaling to 1080p) and BD-LIVE capability. And for consumers who don't have an internet connection in the living room, the BD590 adds built-in Wi-Fi to its long list of features.

Pricing and availability on the BD590 has not yet been announced.
