OLED TV is far from over, people! Back in January, LG Electronics was showing off OLED technology at the annual Consumer Electronics Show. There was a ton of fanfare, as show attendees squeezed into the booth to get a glimpse at the super-new, super-thin TV technology. Now, it looks like the company is in a race to bring some of that same excitement to consumers.
According to a new report by the OLED Association, LG is planning to make the 55-inch 55EM9600 OLED TV available for purchase this May. There were rumors that the company was hoping to debut the TV during London's summer Olympics. However, they are set on winning their own race -- to be the first ones to release an OLED TV. As a result, the company will tie the product launch to the Cannes Film Festival.
To date, OLED has been an exclusive for super-small screen sizes. Promising to do everything that plasma and LCD can do -- but better -- OLED is known for its amazingly thin form factor. Boasting excellent color saturation, image uniformity, brightness and contrast, OLED can actually generate the same or better black levels that plasma can do, but in a panel as slim as an LCD.
LG can currently crank out 48,000 55-inch panels per month in the company's pilot 8.5-Gen production line. We have to wonder if that facility will meet demand, considering its $7900 (9 million Korean Won) price tag. Once consumers get a taste of the technology, LG will reevaluate and decide on further OLED investment sometime in July.
Reports say that LG's 55EM9600 features a WOLED-CF design on an Oxide-TFT backplane. It's a mere 4mm thick, and weighs only 7.5Kg (16.5 Pounds). LG also claims a response rate as low as 0.1 microseconds, which promises an excellent contrast and motion response.
