Klipsch Brings Back Classic Klipschorn with 70th Anniversary Heritage Speakers for $16,000

By Rachel Cericola

Looking for some serious bragging rights? You could soon be the proud owner of one of the speaker sets that Klipsch is creating specifically for the company's 70th anniversary.

The bragging rights are part of the package, because the company is only planning to create 70 pairs of each product. Klipsch is planning to issue limited runs of its Klipschorn and Heresy Heritage series speakers.

According to Klipsch, each of the new speakers will feature design enhancements, exotic wood veneer finishes, special edition logos, and unique grille cloths.

The Klipschorn is especially interesting -- and not just because of the price tag. After all, nothing says classic movie house sound like horn speakers, which is why company founder Paul W. Klipsch first launched the Klipschorn loudspeaker in 1946. He wanted to bring that sort of power to the homeowner. These speakers are extremely efficient and tend to put out punchy sound with superb dynamic range. Since the model launched 70 years ago, it has remained relatively unchanged. The speaker's folded low frequency enclosure is efficient, allowing it to be installed in a compact space.

The 70th anniversary edition Klipschorns will feature newly enhanced rear low-frequency horns, which are now fully enclosed. This makes the speaker more flexible when it comes to placement, but still allows it to pack a punch when it comes to cranking out bass. Each set will include a new nameplate, a small plaque identifying its numbered sequence in the series, and a signature by the craftsman. Other features include a retro-style silver luster grille cloth and Australian Walnut wood veneer.

The Heresy speaker traces its roots back to 1957 as a compact center-channel speaker designed to accompany the Klipschorn. However, the third iteration, the Heresy III, did get an upgrade with a more powerful woofer, bi-wire network, and new midrange and tweeter compression drivers with a titanium diaphragm.

The limited-edition Heresy will include the nameplate, the plaque, the signature, and the retro-style silver luster grille cloth, similar to the Klipschorn. Other features include a new matte-black slant riser base, Australian Walnut wood veneer enclosures, and grain-matched using wood veneer panels.

The 70th Anniversary Heresy is available now, priced at $3,200 per pair. The 70th Anniversary Klipschorn will start selling in May 2016, priced at $16,000 per pair.
