Last January, DISH Network made a huge splash with the announcement of the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR. (If you want to know why, read our DISH Network Hopper Whole-House DVR Review.) Now, the satellite provider is looking to tweak the experience a bit. The company just announced DISH Explorer for the iPad, a second-screen app for Hopper users.
Designed specifically for use with the iPad, DISH Explorer combines program-discovery tools, social media, and remote control. Available starting tomorrow (January 7, 2013), the new app can recommend TV shows and reveal some of the most popular programmng choices, by cross-referencing social media television viewing trends and real-time viewership data from DISH's customer base.
Subscribers can also connect to other DISH Explorer users via social media, as well as log into Twitter and Facebook in real-time.
Sports fans will also appreciate the addition of the "Thuuz" ratings system, which can identify the hottest games on TV and provides viewers with real-time sports stats when watching live events on the Hopper.
Users can also tap into a web-enabled Hopper via WiFi, meaning you can ditch the remote. Just use your iPad!
"Customers are already using tablets while watching TV but, until Explorer, it had been two separate experiences," said Vivek Khemka, vice president of product management at DISH. "What we've done is develop an integrated, seamless experience between the tablet and the television; only the Hopper creates an entirely new viewing dynamic."
Starting tomorrow, the DISH Explorer app will available for free via the iTunes App Store.
