Just a few weeks ago, we took a look at D-Link's Boxee Box, the latest entry into the streaming set-top market. During our review, we noted that the little guy seemed to have a lot of potential. Now, the box is taking one extra step towards that potential, announcing availability of Netflix on the set-top box.
Netflix will now join the recently added VUDU, to deliver thousands of TV shows and movie titles to Boxee Box users.
As we mentioned in Boxee Box review, it's little additions like this one that will make the box a real competitor in the market. Hulu Plus is supposedly going to be the next upgrade, although there's no word on when that service will be added.
To start viewing Netflix on the Boxee Box, you will first need a streaming Netflix subscription, which starts at $7.99 per month. Next, download the software upgrade to your Boxee Box, which can be accessed under the Settings menu. After a reboot, launch Netflix from the Apps menu. From there, you will be prompted to enter your Netflix user name and password.
Netflix on the Boxee Box includes a nice interface update. Aside from offering more cover art options on-screen, there's instant access to suggestions, new arrivals, and a peek by genre.
Netflix can be a mixed bag, as far as what's available in HD. However, the newly added VUDU service does offer many titles in the VUDU HDX format, with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround. VUDU rentals start at $2.99 each (for SD). VUDU is also offering Boxee Box users a $5.99 credit towards a first rental or purchase.
