CES: VUDU launches VUDU Apps for HDTVs and Blu-ray Players

By Greg Robinson

VUDU, the popular movie streaming service, has taken the wraps off its latest endeavor: VUDU Apps. After forging new partnerships with Toshiba, Sanyo, Sharp and Mitsubishi, VUDU has created the VUDU Apps platform to deliver movie streaming and various internet apps to network-connected displays and Blu-ray Disc players.

Using a "cloud-based" architecture that's been optimized for consumer electronics products, VUDU Apps serves as a launch pad for internet-based applications such as:

  • Pandora
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Flickr
  • Picasa
  • AP
  • NY Times Videos
  • Meet the Press
  • Good Morning America
  • Sesame Street
  • C-net News

... and that's just to name a few. At launch more than 100 applications will be available, all accessed from VUDU's exceptional User Interface (UI).

VUDU Apps will a free service initially available on select models of Toshiba, Sharp, Sanyo and Mitsubishi HDTVs as well as Toshiba Blu-ray Disc players. Unfortunately, VUDU Apps will not be available on the standalone, hard drive-based VUDU box - the device that first introduced us to VUDU's movie streaming service. Hopefully that will change in the coming months.

It should also be noted that LG's 42LH50 (which I recently reviewed) - which DOES have VUDU's basic movie streaming service - does not yet have access to VUDU Apps, but LG is actively considering the addition.
