Bowers & Wilkins Celebrates 50 Years with $900 Headphones

By Rachel Cericola

Bowers & Wilkins is getting ready to celebrate 50 years in the business. A few months back, we told you that the company was planning to mark this milestone with a new speaker product. Now, it looks like they have another interesting surprise in the works.

The company just announced the P9 Signature, a brand-new set of headphones. Bowers & Wilkins says that the P9 Signature will be its "most luxurious" headphone release to date -- and it has the price to prove it.

Priced at $899.99, the P9 Signature is also Bowers & Wilkins' largest over-ear headphones to date. The cushy set was engineered by the same team responsible for B&W's 800 D3 loudspeaker. It's also specifically designed for people who are picky about how they listen to music.

The P9 Signature promises a smooth, natural sound, thanks to the placement of the transducer. Adding to the uniqueness of this set, Bowers & Wilkins says that nothing on the P9 Signature is off the shelf; everything is custom. This includes the strong headband, which is decoupled from each ear cup, so there's no unwanted vibration.

Other features include Italian Saffiano leather crafted from a "stamping" technique to give it a distinctive cross-hatch finish, memory foam cushions in the ear pads to help with noise isolation, and aluminum arms with a foldable design. Even the case is special, since it's crafted from Alcantara, which has a suede-like feel.

Bowers & Wilkins is shipping the P9 Signature with a variety of cables for use at home and on the go. If you register your purchase on the company's website, you will also receive a new Lightning cable when it becomes available in early 2017.

Bowers & Wilkins is selling the P9 Signature online now, priced at $899.99. It will then get a wider retail release starting October 15, 2016.
