Aperion Audio and Focus Enhancements Do Wireless 7.1 Surround Right

By Chris Chiarella

Well-respected consumer-direct speaker manufacturer Aperion Audio has joined forces with Focus Enhancements, Inc., a leading supplier of wireless audio solutions, to deliver the first-ever loudspeakers with what they are calling true high-definition wireless home theater surround sound. The key is Focus Enhancements' "Summit" wireless technology. Summit is different from wireless solution past in several ways, for its ease of setup, advanced speaker configuration--including SpeakerFinder, which works automatically, anywhere--as well as eight levels of link protection to assure a strong connection to as many as seven speakers plus a subwoofer.

But wait... there's more: using the MyZone feature and the remote control, we can recalibrate the sweet spot wherever we want to sit, smartly, painlessly adjusting the volume and phase delay for all speakers. The Aperion and Focus Enhancement folks were kind enough to talk me through the basic setup, using the SpeakerBuddy graphic user interface.

Aperion Intimus loudspeakers like this 5C center channel were on display as part of the closed-door wireless demo with Focus Enhancements.

Sure enough, an Aperion Intimus 5 system on display at this year's CEDIA EXPO in Atlanta reproduced high-fidelity audio; with what they assured me was a 24-bit, 48Khz pure digital path; without the benefit of speaker cables. Look for Aperion speakers with integrated Summit wireless technology to start hitting in the first half of 2010. Although no pricing has been announced yet, we're told to expect perhaps a 30% premium versus their wired speaker counterparts.
