If anyone had any doubt that Amazon would take a bite out of Apple in tablet sales, those doubts will be removed when you see Amazon's sale figures for the Kindle eReaders and Kindle Fire tablet.
The online retailer just announced 2011 sales numbers for its popular Kindle product line. In December alone, Amazon customers purchased over 1 million Kindle devices per week. Those types of numbers kept the Kindle Fire, the Kindle Touch and the original Kindle in the top three spots on Amazon's best-seller charts.
Amazon says that Kindle Fire, in particular, was the most gifted and most wished for item across Amazon since the company debuted the product back in September. Well, it looks like a lot of those wishes came true this year. The company also says that the gifting of Kindle books was up 175 percent between this Black Friday and Christmas Day, when compared to the same period in 2010. Christmas Day alone was the biggest day ever for Kindle book downloads.
"We are grateful to our customers worldwide for making this the best holiday ever for Kindle," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO. "And in a huge milestone for independent publishing, we'd also like to congratulate Darcie Chan, the author of The Mill River Recluse, and Chris Culver, the author of The Abbey, for writing two of the best-selling Kindle books of the year."
Amazon's Kindle family currently features five different devices, starting with the $79 standard Kindle. The top of the line is the Kindle Fire. Released back in September, the $199 Kindle Fire includes a full color 7-inch touchcreen, a customized version of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, web browsing, and thousands of app options to movies, TV shows, games, and more.
