Onkyo continues to blaze a trail with performance-oriented yet affordable home theater gear. Whether it's their 1080p capable HDMI-switching home theater receivers, DVD players or packaged home theater systems, one thing you know when you buy Onkyo is that you'll get a lot of bang for your buck.
And now their 7.1-channel HT-S990THX home theater in a box (HTIB) system, the first of its kind to be THX-certified, is on sale on OneCall for $869.99 - that's $230 below the MSRP of $1099.
Onkyo's HT-S990THX system includes a home theater receiver, 7 speakers and a powered subwoofer so you'll be ready to rock the house with 7.1-channel surround.
Consisting of an XM-Ready 7.1-channel A/V receiver and complete 7.1-channel speaker package, the HT-S990THX combines the performance of higher priced separate components with the convenience and affordability of an all-in-one system. Just drop in a DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc player and a high quality display and you're in business.
The HT-S990THX A/V receiver features 32-bit DSP (digital signal processing) and is capable of decoding Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, and DTS 96/24. Additionally, it includes processing for Dolby Digital ProLogic IIx, DTS Neo:6, THX Cinema2, THX Music, and THX Games which enable it to derive enhanced surround sound from any two- or five-channel audio source. All audio channels feature 192kHz/24-bit digital to analog converters and the receiver's amplifier modules feature Onkyo's exclusive WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology).
The receiver sports a wide range of connections, including HD-capable component video switching for up to three high definition A/V source components such as HDTV tuner, DVD player, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray Disc player, and/or gaming console. There are also three composite/S-Video inputs and two outputs, as well as four assignable digital audio inputs. The HTS990THX also features a a universal remote which can even control your iPod via Onkyo's optional DS-A1 iPod docking station.
In addition to a built-in AM/FM tuner, the receiver features XM "Connect and Play" and XM Passport technologies which enable you to receive XM satellite radio, through the use of an inexpnsive optional XM antenna or portable passport tuner (plus XM subscription fees, of course). The HT-S990THX even includes integrated Neural Surround processing, making it compatible with the XM HD Surround programming for 5.1-channel surround sound radio broadcasts.
The HTS990 system's receiver is accompanied by a set of seven tonally matched two-way speakers. The front and center channel speakers each include a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter and dual 5-inch woofers constructed from Onkyo's A-OMF (Onkyo Micro Fiber) cones. The front and center channels are also magnetically shielded to prevent interference with video reproduction when placed near a CRT TV.
Side and rear surround speakers all feature 5-1/8 inch A-OMF woofers and the same tweeter found in the front channels to deliver a seamless 360-degree soundstage. Bass reproduction is handled by a 12-inch subwoofer with built-in 230-Watt power amp.
