If the tidy appearance of your living room or home theater is marred by a messy tangle of cables behind your TV, consider ZyXEL's Aerobeam WirelessHD line.
Designed to make home theater system and media center installations slightly more simple (and less cluttered), the line's first product is the newly announced WHD6215 adapter. This compact device allows users to wirelessly connect up to four HDMI devices to any HD display. That means there is no need to tether all (or at least a few) of your components in order to enjoy them on the big screen. It also makes it easy to tuck some of those boxes into convenient spaces, without needing to run wires in or across the walls.
Besides the $199 MSRP, the hook on this product is that it includes support for delivering 3D, 1080p and 7.1 channel surround sound, when available. The WHD6215 is designed to work with virtually all HDMI components, including Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, tablets, laptops, and more.
Using Silicon Image's WiHD technology standard, the WHD6215 taps into 60GHz millimeter wave technology to deliver reliable, uninterrupted HD video and audio to your display and or home theater receiver. ZyXEL Communications says that the technology also doesn't suffer from the interference issues that sometimes plague Wi-Fi devices.
"The WHD6215 offers entertainment enthusiasts a clutter-free way to enjoy their media," said Steven Joe, executive VP for ZyXEL's channel business for Americas . "This solution eliminates the need for consumers to tether multiple devices to their screens with unsightly cables and incur expensive professional installation costs. Our WHD6215 allows users to place components where they want them, without the lag or compromised video quality found in other wireless video streaming solutions."
ZyXEL's WHD6215 is the first product to be marketed under the Aerobeam line. The kit will start selling in July for $199 (MSRP). That purchase price includes the transceiver and receiver. Other units and kits are expected to follow.
