The Film
Move over Dancing With the Stars because this dancing with the nobodies is actually a much better guilty pleasure. While the story is a total go-nowhere slow predictable tale of a group of ne'er do wells, in this case who try to make good by entering a dance contest, the real reason to watch You Got Served: Beat the World is for the actual dance sequences. Too bad it takes 90 minutes to see the type of routines that can be watched on YouTube in a few minutes. But here they look all the more choreographed and they're presented in HD.
The Picture
While a silly film that is predictable and filled with clichés, it looks damn fine on Blu-ray. The 2.35:1 1080p presentation really makes the dance sequences come to life, where you see every detail in crystal clarity - and you might even catch a few missteps. The film also makes good use of stock footage (mostly from the air) of Detroit - and frankly the city has never looked so good - along with scenes in Brazil and Germany. Visually You Got Served serves it up and more some with accurate flesh tones, no visual distractions and every color of the rainbow.
The Sound
If hip hop and Euro dance are the type of music that gets your feet tapping than this one is for you. If not... you can always lower the volume, which might be necessary because frankly this one is loud. You Got Served just pounds throughout, even in scenes where music isn't necessary. That said the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack offers dialog clear and center, and yet still makes great use of ambient noises, background chatter and just feels like a scene out of life in the big city.
The Extras
Where you might feel you got served is when you go to look for the bonus features. There is a making of that really doesn't offer much, as well as a look at the 3RUN team that did the dancing, but this feels like pure marketing rather than anything that is truly a bonus. The BD-Live disc also features some previews but otherwise... you got served.
Final Thoughts
This isn't a great movie but it looks good, sounds great (at least if you like the music) and is actually sort of fun to watch for the dance routines. That said unless you really like those dance scenes there is little to justify serving up this one.
