Oh, how time flies! A Clockwork Orange is about to turn 40. Warner just announced plans to celebrate Stanley Kubrick's ultra-violent cult classic, with A Clockwork Orange: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release.
The two-disc Orange anniversary edition promises a few extras over the 2007 Blu-ray release. The film's violence as well as its cultural impact will be dissected in a new 25-minute documentary titled, "Turning Like Clockwork." There will also be a short with lead actor Malcolm McDowell reminiscing on his experiences with Kubrick. Other full-length extras include "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures" and "O Lucky Malcolm!"
The anniversary set will be packaged inside a 40-page Blu-ray book, which includes rare photos and production notes. TheĀ A Clockwork Orange: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will have an MSRP of $34.99.
The A Clockwork Orange: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will be released on May 31, 2011, the same day as Warner's Stanley Kubrick: Limited Edition Collection. ThisĀ 10-disc Blu-ray set features nine of the director's films. The collection will have the film and bonus materials from A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Edition, as well as Blu-ray debuts for Lolita and Barry Lyndon. Other films in the set include Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. That set will include its own 40-page hardcover book, and an MSRP of $148.95.
May 31 will also be the street date for McDowell's documentary, Never Apologize. The film is mainly an ode to director Lindsay Anderson. However, it also features McDowell talking about Sir Alan Bates, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Laurence Olivier, Bette Davis, Princess Diana, John Ford and Lillian Gish. That is a standard-def DVD release only, priced at $19.97 (MSRP).
Despite the May 31 release date for all three titles, Amazon is currently taking pre-orders and offering discounts on both of the Blu-ray sets.
