Warner Bros.' two-year-old DVD2Blu program to upgrade DVDs for Blu-ray discs received a major upgrade this week. Apparently Warner still has a boat-load of Blu-ray titles in their warehouse as the studio will now accept any DVD from any major or independent studio sold at retail to trade in for Warner Blu-ray titles. The program previously only accepted Warner Bros. DVDs as trade-in toward the exact same title on Blu-ray Disc. But now you can turn virtually any beat-up old DVD over in exchange for a one of over 100 Blu-ray titles from Warner Bros.
Of course, there is a cost associated with this program: the upgrade cost for most titles is a nominal $4.95, though some popular titles and multi-disc sets can cost up to $19.95. Also, there is a flat shipping fee of $4.95 for each order, though this fee is waived for orders over $35.
Simply go to the DVD2Blu Web site, select which titles you'd like to add to your cart, and place your order. Once your order is placed, you will receive confirmation plus a label to print and send your trade-in discs. Keep in mind that you must send in one DVD for each Blu-ray title ordered. Once the studio receives your discs, they will confirm eligility, the send out your shiny new Blu-ray Discs.
The studio is offering over 100 qualifying titles including recent releases such as The Bucket List, Freddy vs. Jason, and Gran Torino. It also has classics including The Dirty Dozen, A Clockwork Orange, and A Christmas Story. TV series including Chuck, Smallville, and Supernatural each have multiple seasons available, among other TV productions.
But do some research(and some basic math) before you trade in those dusty old discs. As the street price of Blu-ray titles comes down and is closer to DVDs, it may be only a few dollars more to buy the title you're willing to trade for on sites such as Amazon.com. For example, the classic film Battle of the Bulge costs $10.99 on Blu-ray on Amazon.com. Similarly, he Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford with Brad Pit and Casey Affleck also costs $10.99. ORders over $25 on Amazon ship free, so you get a few of these titles for not a lot more, without the hassle of sending in old DVDs.
But for larger orders or some of the multi-disc TV titles such as "Chuck," you'll do much better using the DVD2Blu program.
