Velodyne Debuts Digital Servo-10 (DS-10) Subwoofer

By Rachel Cericola

Velodyne is pretty well known for its collection of subwoofers. If you aren't familiar, the company has just the product to make a proper introduction: the new Digital Servo-10 (DS-10) subwoofer.

Designed to put a lot of boom into your room, this sub features a 1250-watt RMS (3000 watts Dynamic Power) ERS Class-D amplifier, which boasts 97 percent efficiency. Other features include a Kevlar-reinforced cone and Velodyne's own 3-inch dual tandem multi-layer voice coil. There's also a patented Digital High Gain Servo system, which promises to correct cone movement almost 16,000 times a second and lower distortion well below audible levels. Everything above is all tuned and controlled by a high-speed DSP processor.

To make for an easy listening experience, the DS-10 ships with factory presets for various music sources and movies, which includes the neighbor-friendly "Night" mode.

Another interesting perk is that the DS-10 comes packing Velodyne's Digital Drive room management technology. Just place the included microphone at your desired listening position and press the EQ button on the remote control. From there, the sub will correct for bass interactions caused by its position and your room using its eight bands of EQ. A manual model is also available for those that love to tweak.

Other features you can futz around with include filter frequencies (both subsonic and low pass crossover), slopes, phase and polarity.

"An elegant, easy and accurate subwoofer, the new DS-10 was built to be as small as physically possible, yet deliver musical accuracy and visceral, ultra-low bass that listeners actually feel," said David Hall, founder and CEO of Velodyne. "The Digital Servo-10 truly raises the standards by which subwoofers will be measured."

Shipping with a furniture-grade satin black finish, this 19.3-pound magnet structure also has a die-cast aluminum basket. The DS-10 comes with a remote, a calibrated microphone, cables, and a built-in signal generator.

Velodyne expects the DS-10 to start shipping in September, with an MSRP of $1,999.
