VUDU Adds Web Browser-Based Movie Streaming

By Rachel Cericola

Whenever we're out of town, we really miss our A/V setup. The speakers, the big screen, the receiver; it's hard to enjoy entertainment anywhere else. Now, you can take a little piece of that setup wherever you go -- at least the VUDU piece.

VUDU just announced plans to offer its streaming movie library on their web site - VUDU.com. That means that you no longer need a VUDU set-top box, a web-enabled HDTV, Blu-ray player or another device to enjoy all of VUDU's streaming movie content.

Just go to VUDU.com, browse the selection, order a movie, and you can start streaming right away. The collection features movies and TV shows, including new releases from both major and indie studios.

"Customers will be able to enjoy movies instantly and easily at VUDU.com with no additional hardware or software download required," said Edward Lichty, VUDU's GM. "This launch is part of our overall commitment to provide the VUDU service through as many points of access as possible, offering our customer the latest movies at the highest available streaming quality wherever they choose to watch."

VUDU offers a variety of ways to search for movies, including sorting titles by genre.

This new offering also bridges the gap between competitors Netflix and Amazon, which both offer streaming services through consumer electronics as well as any web browser.

The VUDU.com selection is identical to what you'd find on your big screen. However, viewing is slightly different. You can still order titles in high-def or the company's own HDX format. However, PC viewing is restricted to SD quality only.

You still may want to flip for the HD though. Once you buy or rent a selection at VUDU.com, it is available through your account on any of the 300 VUDU-enabled devices currently on the market. That means you can start a movie on your computer and finish it in HD (if you bought that version) on any VUDU-enabled HDTV, Blu-ray player, gaming console, or other compatible device.

Buying and watching a movie on VUDU.com is very similar to the service's big-screen experience.
