Oh yes, Godzilla!
It looks like moviegoers won't be fearing the upcoming release of Godzilla. Instead, Dolby is making it so that viewers will be flocking to the nearest theater -- at least the ones with support for Dolby Atmos.
Dolby just announced plans to release Godzilla with a Dolby Atmos mix. The upcoming horror flick will be the 100th title to get the Dolby Atmos treatment. [For a complete list of Dolby Atmos movies to date, go to the Dolby Atmos website.]
Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that can support up to 128 discrete audio tracks and up to 64 unique speaker feeds. This allows filmmakers the freedom to place or move sounds anywhere in the movie. It also sounds perfect for a classic movie monster like Godzilla.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. It debuts in U.S. theaters on May 16, 2014.
"Godzilla is one of the world's most iconic monsters," said Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla. "I'm really excited we are using Dolby Atmos to truly bring this terrifying force of nature to life."
Academy Award-winning rerecording sound mixer Gregg Landaker worked on the sound effects mix, with Oscar-nominated rerecording mixer Rick Kline on the music portion and Tim LeBlanc on the dialogue. Another Oscar nominee, sound specialist Erik Aadahl, did the sound design and worked as the supervising sound editor.
"By using Dolby Atmos to place and move sounds anywhere in a movie theater, Gareth Edwards and his team can recreate the world of Godzilla right in the auditorium, making audiences feel as if they, too, are in the middle of the onscreen action," said Doug Darrow, senior VP of cinema at Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby Atmos is a real paradigm shift from traditional channel-based approaches like 5.1, 7.1, and 11.1. With this new object-based approach, you are no longer just watching a movie, but experiencing it."
