Universal Launches Blu-Ray Features for iPhone/iPod Touch Users
By Rachel Cericola
Some home theater enthusiasts love to multitask. Well, Universal is about to throw another device into the mix. The studio has just announced plans for iPhone and iPod touch-enabled features for upcoming Blu-ray releases -- at least for ones that have companion apps on
Apple's App Store.
The first release to link up with an app is the 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray release of
Fast & Furious. Using the app and an iPhone or iPod touch, users will be able to control interactive content on a web-enabled Blu-ray player. One of those features, "Virtual Car Garage," will allow users to get 360-degree views of the cars in the movie, as well as punch up exclusive technical specs.
Later this year, Universal expects to branch out, offering exclusive content that users can download directly to an iPhone or iPod touch. Other features will include the ability to use the device as a remote and/or access additional info about the cast and film -- all while watching the movie.
Universal will also use the apps as a gateway to sites such as Facebook and Twitter, so users can talk to friends about movie-related activities.
The app will be available on July 28, 2009, the same day as the release of the 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray of
Fast & Furious. The hit stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. The app is free, but the 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray set has an MSRP of $39.98.
