The Film
Comedy Central scored big when they hired comedian Daniel Tosh to host Tosh.0. The weekly series became a mega-hit on a shoestring budget and now the network is reaping some additional revenue by releasing the Blu-ray, Tosh.0: Hoodies.
Given recent events, the title seems completely inappropriate. However, it actually comes from Tosh's choice of wardrobe. Yes, viewers can expect a hoodie fashion show throughout the disc's 10 episodes. (What the? The first season had 16!) That's not to say that Tosh would care whether you're offended or not -- in fact, he and Comedy Central are banking on it.
Tosh.0 is not for the easily offended or those with weak stomachs. Tosh has a knack for unearthing some of the vilest viral videos. What's left seems like it was cherry-picked from the America's Funniest Home Videos reject pile.
Oh, that's not to say it isn't funny. While you may have a hard time admitting it (or stomaching it), the guy is downright hilarious. And while every video may not be viral-worthy, Tosh has the quick wit to elevate the funny.
The Picture
Because most of Tosh.0 is web clips, some of this 1.78:1 transfer looks downright crappy. Thankfully, Tosh in the studio and his filmed segments are a different story. Whether Tosh is hanging poolside, stuffing a guy inside a giant balloon, hanging in the shower with Reh Dogg, or officiating a game of Drunk Slam Dunk with Dennis Rodman, the colors are spot-on.
The Sound
With the exception of some laughter from the audience, the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is a front-heavy affair. Dialogue is very clear in the newer segments. All of the web clips are as good as the source material, but don't worry about missing any of the jokes -- unless you're watching through your fingers, of course.
The Extras
Don't expect commentary or any of Tosh's stand-up clips. This collection lumps 11 extra tidbits under the title "Digital Exclusives, Extended Segments, and Outtakes." Eight of the 11 clips run under a minute, some are funnier than others, and all are fairly pointless. The most annoying portion of this section, however, is that there is no way to "play all" of the clips, so you're going to have to launch each one individually from the main menu.
Final Thoughts
Tosh.0: Hoodies is a funny collection from the show's humble beginnings. Viewers may notice that some of the newer shows have a slightly larger production value and a much larger gross-out factor. That said, it's probably wise to sample Tosh.0 on Comedy Central before committing to buy an entire Blu-ray. His brand of comedy is not for the squeamish. If you can stomach it, Hoodies is certainly a nice cornerstone of releases to come. Enjoy!
